1989 Jaguar XJS V12

Following the legendary E-Type was no easy task, but the Jaguar XJ-S did it with grace. Originally introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975, it was based on the XJ saloon and carried on with a derivative of the Series 3 E-Type’s 5.3 litre V12 engine with the addition of electronic fuel injection. V12 engine cars were unusual at the time with notable exceptions coming from Italian luxury sports car makers Lamborghini and Ferrari. The specifications of the XJS compared well with both Italian cars and it was able to accelerate to 60mph in 7.6 seconds and had a top speed of 143mph.

Developed by William Heynes Jaguar Chief Engineer and Vice Chairman using the platform and chassis of the then current Heynes designed XJ saloon the XJ-S was noted for its prominent rear flying buttresses. The early styling initiated by Heynes and partially by Jaguars aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer – who was one of the first designers to apply advanced aero principles to cars. Its spec was brought up to modern luxury standards with niceties such as power windows, locks, and climate control. The official factory XJ-S convertible was introduced much later in the model run, in 1988 for the ‘89 model year. Now with anti-lock brakes and a four-speed automatic transmission behind the smooth V12, the convertible added a powered hood with integrated glass rear window (including demister) to an already opulent spec, replacing the earlier XJ-SC Cabriolet design. Due to the increased costs, the V-12 convertibles price rose to $56,000. Upon its release, it was officially the most expensive Jaguar ever offered for sale.

This specific 2 owner example XJ-S still retains its immaculate condition showing just over 45,000 kilometers. The factory blue metallic paint with grey leather interior is a tasteful combination and is still in showroom condition. The vehicle has been recently inspected to ensure it is in proper working condition and is accompanied with a lengthy service history. These days, the XJ-S has stepped out of the shadows of the E-Type to become a classic, as people come to appreciate its blend of sophistication, power, and poise.
