When Mercedes-Benz wanted a flagship sedan that could outrun nearly everything on the autobahn, it did what it always does and over-engineered the answer. The 450SEL 6.9 was the fastest four-door of its day.
Introduced in 1975, the 6.9 took the W116 S-Class and fitted it with the largest V8 Mercedes had built since the 600. The 6.9-litre, fuel-injected, dry-sump engine made it the quickest and most expensive sedan in the lineup. Just as important was the hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension, also a nod to the 600, which kept the car flat and composed under load and gave it a ride few sedans have matched before or since. Fewer than 7,500 were built in total, and only a small number found their way to North America.
It’s a rare chance to own one of the great sleepers of the 1970s: a quiet, understated sedan with the performance to back up the three-pointed star on the hood.
