When Enzo Ferrari (allegedly) says that you’ve made the most beautiful car of all time, you know you’ve got something special. In production for just 15 years, the Jaguar E-Type (known as the Jaguar XKE in the American market) epitomizes the sleek, speedy, sporty ’60s; appropriately enough younger audiences may recognize it as the vehicle preferred by Austin Powers. Born in 1961, Jaguar rolled out E-Type Series I roadsters to immediate acclaim, and the combination of extreme style, high speed (up to 150mph, making it the fastest production car on the market) and relatively low price made for a compelling package to buyers. Collectors most adore the version of the Series I that emerged in 1965 with a slightly larger engine size and technological advances like an alternator and better brakes. A brief transitional Series I½ (largely identified by a change in headlights) paved the way for the Series II E-Type in 1968, which added a wraparound bumper and changes for US safety regulation compliance. Power steering and air conditioning were introduced as options.
